Linux Kernel v3.4-rc5-precise Is Released

Linux kernel v3.4-rc5-precise is released…. use on your own risk . Stuff like drivers for wifi and video cards may not work after installing this kernel.


For 32 bit download these packages and save them to your Downloads folder

linux-headers-3.4.0-030400rc5_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_all.deb

linux-headers-3.4.0-030400rc5-generic_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_i386.deb

linux-image-3.4.0-030400rc5-generic_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_i386.deb

To install the packages open a terminal window (press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy+paste the following lines:

cd ~/Downloads/
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.4.0-030400rc5_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_all.deb linux-headers-3.4.0-030400rc5-generic_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_i386.deb linux-image-3.4.0-030400rc5-generic_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_i386.deb

When the packages are installed close your terminal window and restart your system.


For 64 bit download these packages and save them to your Downloads folder

linux-headers-3.4.0-030400rc5_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_all.deb

linux-headers-3.4.0-030400rc5-generic_3.4.0-030400rc5.201205011817_amd64.deb

Re kernel upgrades. Why is it necessary when existing kernels performs all that is needed? I certainly wouldn’t be installing a new…just because it is new…and risk breaking my system.
