gdm2setup Utility for Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala”

Here is a login interface management utility to change your GDM. It allows you to set a wallpaper/picture as login background, change the autologin option, prompted or userlist login, etc.

To add gdm2setup to your Synaptic Package Manager open a Terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following line:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gdm2setup/gdm2setup

To install gdm2setup copy+paste the following lines:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install python-gdm2setup

gdm2setup will now update along with your other packages automatically. When installed you can find gdm2setup under System -> Administration -> Login Screen(GDM2Setup)


Install Firefox 3.6.2 Beta (Namoroka) Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala”

Here is a guide to install Firefox 3.6.2 Beta (Namoroka) on Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala”


Note: If you already have a version of Firefox 3.5 installed from a repo then upgrade using the following command:

sudo apt-get upgrade

First add the Mozilla daily ppa to your Repo’s, to do so open a Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following line:

ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa

Then type:

sudo apt-get update

To install Firefox 3.6 type:

sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6

When installed you can find Firefox 3.6 under Applications -> Internet -> Namoroka Web Browser

If you want to install Firefox 3.6 Beta in Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope” and 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex” follow these steps.

First you need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list file, open a Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following line:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then add the one of the following lines:

For Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope”

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

For Ubuntu 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex”

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

Save and exit the file

To add the PPA GPG key open a Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following line:

sudo apt-key adv –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 247510BE

To update the source list copy+paste the following line:

sudo apt-get update

To install Firefox 3.6 copy+paste the following line:

sudo apt-get install firefox-3.6

To install open a Terminal (Applicatoins -> Accesories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following lines:

wget http://n00bsonubuntu.com/downs/jokerxsplash.tar.gz

sudo tar xzvf jokerxsplash.tar.gz -C /usr/share/images/xsplash

To remove the downloaded file copy+paste the following line:

sudo rm -r ~/jokerxsplash.tar.gz

To uninstall and restore the xsplash copy+paste the following lines:

wget http://n00bsonubuntu.com/downs/restorexsplash.tar.gz

sudo tar xzvf restorexsplash.tar.gz -C /usr/share/images/xsplash

To remove the downloaded file copy+paste the following line:

sudo rm -r ~/restorexsplash.tar.gz

Install BitDefender Ubuntu 9.10 “karmic Koala”

BitDefender is a program to check for Windows viruses and malware. It can be run in the background or on demand when required. Once installed it can be found under Applications – Systems Tools. It can be used as an alternative to clamav/clamtk.

Installation

Add the repository by going to System -> Administration -> Software Sources and click on the ‘Third Party Software’ tab. Now click on ‘Add’ and copy+paste the following line:

deb http://download.bitdefender.com/repos/deb/ bitdefender non-free

Click on ‘Close’ and press ‘Reload’ when prompted. Ignore the ‘No repository key’ error (if displayed). To add the repository key open a Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and copy+paste the following lines::

wget http://download.bitdefender.com/repos/deb/bd.key.asc
sudo apt-key add bd.key.asc

Now update the sources list:

sudo apt-get update

To install the graphical interface and command line program copy+paste the following line:

sudo apt-get install bitdefender-scanner-gui

Once complete you now need to log out and log back in again. a menu shortcut will be generated (Applications -> System Tools -> BitDefender Scanner).

Before running the scanner it’s probably best to install the latest virus/malware signatures by clicking on the ‘Update’ button.

BitDefender comes with a standard 30 day free license, when first installed. It is free for private and personal use – the license can be extended to one year by requesting a new license key from http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Products/ScannerLicense/ For all business use a paid for license is required.
